Speaker Event - Jay Sevin Presentation, Part 2

CEU Credits for BCBAs. This is the second in a two-part series of presentations on applications of Applied Behavior Analysis to understanding and treating mental illness in persons with developmental disabilities. Attendance of Part One is not required to attend this second presentation. This two-hour presentation focuses on applied behavior analytic models of the causes, assessment, and treatment of depression. Seminal positions regarding depression by Skinner and Ferster are reviewed as well as research studies on ABA treatments of depression in persons with developmental disabilities. Case examples highlight considerations related to topics such as functional assessment, contingency management, motivating operations, and generalization. The speaker argues that standard evidence-based behavioral treatments and cognitive-behavioral treatments for mental health conditions can at times be enhanced by analyses and treatment modifications conducted from an ABA perspective. This presentation will also review categories of behavioral treatments for selective mutism as well as some applied behavior analytic considerations with respect to the evaluation of pharmacological interventions in persons with developmental disabilities.
