Sophia began having issues with fatigue and shortness of breath in April and was diagnosed with Anemia. She began iron infusions in May. And continues to receive them monthly. In July she began having some bleeding from her rectum, abdominal cramps, and upper abdominal burning. She was ordered to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy. The procedures were originally scheduled for August, but her insurance was giving her issues causing the procedures to be pushed back another two times. Her doctor was able to see the mass through the colonoscopy, but because the mass is so large the doctor was unable to push the scope through. Her doctor believes the tumor has been there for a while and referred her to see a surgeon immediately. The morning after the diagnosis, Sophia went to the surgeon and the surgeon did not want to wait. She had surgery on Friday, October 11 to remove the right side of her colon along with some lymphnodes. They removed approximately 1 foot of her colon. The tumor was about the size of a baseball. Thankfully the CT scan showed that the cancer has not spread. Now, we wait for the biopsy results to determine which stage of cancer we are dealing with. This page has been created for Sophia because she is not one to ask for help. She is a teacher at the Bright School for the Deaf as well as a student studying to become an Occupational Therapist Assistant. She loves working with children and takes pride in advocating for children with special needs. She focuses much more on the needs of others than she does herself. It’s only fitting that she plans to go to grad school to become an Occupational Therapist. Sophia is unable to work during this time and is unsure of when she will be able to return. Things are moving quickly and this unexpected diagnosis will have extensive medical expenses for procedures and follow ups. Your help will alleviate some of the pressure and stresses of worrying about money from Sophia’s mind. No donation or dollar amount is too small. Our family appreciates your time for listening to Sophia’s story and ask that you send positive thoughts and prayers for her healing.
